Pet ownership is a serious responsibility. The whole family needs to be involved in the decision to get a dog. Our policy is to insure that each person who adopts a dog not only be aware of that responsibility, but that each person be willing and able to accept this responsibility morally, physically and financially. We have found that not every person who desires to own a French Bulldog should own one. They are unique and have some health concerns, but are wonderful in the right home.

This questionnaire was designed to aid both you and us in determining if you and your family are indeed adequately prepared to assume the type of responsible pet ownership we are endeavoring to provide for our dogs.

 Please read carefully and sign:

I agree that if the information given on this questionnaire is not accurate to the best of my knowledge, I forfeit all rights and ownership of the French Bulldog acquired from BigStar.

I also agree that if at any time in the future I can no longer keep this dog, I will not give it away or sell it. I will contact BigStar for arrangements to be made for the dog's return to them.

I have read completely the above questionnaire, and understand it fully.

Why So Much?

The cost to a breeder for a Frenchie litter can run $2,500 - 4,500 dollars (not counting the time). To give you an idea:

  • Litter size average is usually 1-4 puppies.
  • The Cost for a c-section, usually about $800-1,200 assuming it is during normal vet hours. After hours, weekends and holidays will run extra.
  • Semen/stud service plus shipping if applies to breed the dog is usually around $800-1,500.
  • Additionally there is the bitch pre-breeding tests ($350-500), exams ($100-200), x-rays ($100-150); ultra sounds ($100-250). We also do extensive health testing on our dogs before they are ever bred ($300-500 each).

French Bulldogs usually (98%) of the time require a c-section for delivery of the puppies and artificial insemination to breed. C-sections are required for several reasons like: high rates of water puppies which can't pass through the birth canal, large head and shoulders of the puppies, stress and heat factors may cause a Frenchie trouble. It is very time consuming compared to other breeds where every thing is taken care of by the male and female dog including the breeding, birth, delivery and raising of the litter.

When a litter is born we are involved at least every two hours for the first three week. Frenchies don't make the best mothers for various reasons and litters are at least human assisted for weeks around the clock. This is a special breed which requires the help of humans to bring a litter to 8-12 weeks of age.

They’re worth every penny and once you have been owned by Frenchie you could never again be without one. Most reputable breeders sell quality companions for between $2,000 -3,000.00 and you can expect the breeder to be there for you with help when needed. We are available for the life of our puppies.

                                                        Anesthesia Protocol
(Please note: We are NOT vets and this is our personal choice and opinion; please speak to
your own vet for their professional advice when it comes to sedating your Frenchie)

NEVER GIVE FRENCHIES: Ace promazine Pentobarbital aka Pentathol (injectable anesthesia) Metofane (inhalant gas) Halothane (gas anesthesia)

USE WITH CAUTION: Dormitor (reversible anesthesia/sedative)

SATISFACTORY CHOICES FOR FRENCHIES: Ketamine (usually used in combo with valium as an injectable anesthesia/sedative) Valium (see above) Torbutrol (analgesia)

OPTIMUM CHOICES: Propofol (injectable) with either of the following 2 gas anesthetics as a maintenance: Isoflurane(aka IsoFlo) OR Sevoflurane (aka SevoFlo)

EXTRAS FOR C-SECTIONS: (This is in addition to the Optimum anesthetic protocol listed above) Atropine given at induction Place the mom-to-be on IV fluids Oxytocin injections (usually one after all the pups are out and she begins sewing up the uterus and the second about 20-30 minutes later) Antibiotic injection post-op

INTUBATION vs. MASKING/CONING DOWN: EVERY brachycephalic dog that goes under anesthesia should have an endotracheal tube (ET) placed in their trachea! Always! We need to protect that airway at all times.... The tube should be left in until they are VERY awake and about to chew it out... I use the intravenous propofol to induce anesthesia (which puts them under) this gives me a few minutes to place the ET tube... then I connect them to either the sevo or iso... so they are always tubed...

Be Careful when masking a frenchie down. Masking them down can sometimes be harder on brachycephalic dogs because they struggle to hold their breath (so they don't inhale the strange smelling gas) which can irritate the airways and deplete their oxygen levels (which you do not want before surgery). It is my opinion that using injectable and then tubing them gives them an optimum oxygen supply which is ideal for frenchies.
